Management of stiffness of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the finger
remains a controversial problem. Despite the large number of papers describing the
different approaches in releasing flexion and extension contractures in PIP joints,
only two studies actually support their conclusions with statistical analyses. The
aim of this study was twofold. The first goal was to statistically analyze the results
of extensor tenolysis with dorsal capsulotomy for PIP joints in extension contractures.
Secondly, the gain in range of motion (ROM) in the PIP joint following extensor tenolysis
and dorsal capsulotomy was compared with that found in the literature.
