James W. King, MA, OTR, serving as Guest Editor for this special issue on diagnostic imaging of the hand, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of River Oaks Imaging and Diagnostic, Houston, TX. Jim is the past-President of the American Society of Hand Therapists; is an ASHT Lifetime Membership Recipient; and 2005 Nathalie Barr Lecturer.
David Jewell, MD, is a native of Natchez, Mississippi and was Director of Radiology for an outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) center in Lafayette, Louisiana until 2003 when he opened his own MRI center. In this setting he is able to concentrate on his own clinical specialty, MRI interpretation. Dr. Jewell is a member of the Clinical Magnetic Resonance Society. Top on list of MRI topics are the musculoskeletal system, spine, brain, and sports medicine injuries.
The Editor of the JHT, Ken Flowers, PT, CHT, has collaborated with the Editor elect, Paul LaStayo, PhD, PT, CHT, to present a clinical example of how the therapist's looking at an x-ray made a big difference in the management of a wrist case. Ken and Paul are well known for their numerous educational programs on biomechanics and examination of the wrist. Ken's Scar Wars papers and lectures are classics in the hand rehab community. Both authors have published many papers together and individually and received the highest awards given by the ASHT over their past almost 20 years of joint ventures.
Amy L. Ladd, MD, originally contributed her paper on radiology of the shoulder in the JHT special issue on the shoulder in 1994. She is currently a Professor at the Stanford University Medical School and Chief of the Robert A. Chase Hand and Upper Extremity Center in Palo Alto, California. Her favorite professional subjects include congenital anomalies, distal radius fractures, and reconstructive procedures of the hand and upper limb. Presently, Dr. Ladd is involved with research on capturing and imaging human movement and high-resolution anatomy. We are pleased to reprint her 1994 article in this special issue on upper extremity imaging.
Steen Lindequist, MD, is from Oslo, Norway. In collaboration with Claudio Marelli, MD, Dr. Lindquist presents an overview of imaging of the upper extremity to get us started on this special issue. He is currently serving as Medical Director of Capio Diagnostics, the Division of Radiology. Dr. Lindequist has published work on a variety of imaging topics, including MS radiology, contrast media, and technology.
Stephen Rose, MD, is a Houston-based expert on breast imaging, practicing at the Memorial Hermann Breast Center of the University of Texas where he is its Medical Director. Though his primary professional area of interest is in breast imaging and intervention, he has also published on MRI of the cervical spine. In this issue, Dr. Rose offers a contemporary review of the state of the art in the detection of breast cancer.
Susan Weiss, OTR/L, CHT, is a frequent contributor to the JHT, writing several times about thumb pathology and splinting. She was coauthor of a paper that won the Petzoldt Award. In addition, she has been given the ASHT Best Scientific Paper Award, and the New Writer's Award. The Florida Hand Society presented her a Burkholter award. She is a principal of Exploring Hand Therapy based in St. Petersburg, Florida.
